Turfing engineers carrying out a topographic survey on a river bed for the Middle Midim Hydropower Project, Lamjung

Hydropower & Civil Engineering Consultants · Kathmandu, Nepal Engineering the Water.Powering the Future.

Hydropower & civil engineering consultancy for Nepal's challenging terrain — from first survey to commissioned powerhouse.

Hydropower Scheme

Typical run-of-river layout.

Water is diverted at the intake, cleaned of gravel and sediment, carried along the headrace at a gentle gradient, then dropped through the penstock to spin the turbines in the powerhouse.

Run-of-river hydropower scheme Water flows from the intake through the gravel trap, desander, headrace and surge tank or forebay, then down the penstock to the powerhouse, where turbines generate electricity before the water returns to the river. 1. 1

    Intake

Diverts part of the river flow through a trash rack into the waterway.

  2. 2

    Gravel Trap

Settles out gravel and coarse bed load just after the intake.

  3. 3

    Desander

Slows the flow so fine sediment settles before it can wear the turbines.

  4. 4

    Headrace

Carries water at a gentle gradient along the hillside, gaining head over the river.

  5. 5

    Surge / Forebay

Steadies the flow and absorbs pressure surges ahead of the penstock.

  6. 6

    Penstock

Drops the water steeply under pressure, turning head into energy.

  7. 7

    Powerhouse

Turbines and generators produce electricity, then water returns to the river.

Message from the Chairman

Er. Sujan Malbul, Chairman of Turfing Technical Consults Pvt. Ltd.
Er. Sujan Malbul Chairman

At Turfing Technical Consults, our work begins where the terrain gets difficult — steep valleys, seasonal rivers, and remote sites across Nepal's hills and mountains. Every hydropower and civil engineering project we undertake is built on rigorous field investigation, sound engineering judgment, and hands-on supervision through to commissioning.

As Chairman, my commitment is simple: to deliver technically sound, buildable engineering solutions that stand up to Nepal's demanding terrain and genuinely serve the communities and clients who depend on them. We look forward to partnering with you on your next project.

Our Expertise

Eight disciplines.
One project team.

Turfing keeps hydropower and civil engineering in-house, so a scheme's hydraulic design and its structural design are never solved in isolation.

01

Hydropower Development

Run-of-river schemes taken from site identification and feasibility through detailed engineering and project development.

02

Hydraulic Structures

Headworks, intakes, canals, desanders and forebays.

03

Hydrology & Hydraulics

Flow analysis and hydraulic modelling to size each scheme correctly.

04

Sediment Management

Sediment assessment for Himalayan rivers to protect intakes and turbines.

05

Penstock & Transient Analysis

Penstock design and water-hammer checks for safe operation.

06

Survey & GIS

Topographic survey, river gauging and GIS mapping from the first site visit.

07

Civil & Structural Engineering

Structural design of powerhouses, buildings and civil works.

08

Construction Supervision

Hands-on site supervision that keeps the design buildable — through to commissioning of the powerhouse.

Our Approach

From investigation
to commissioning.

Every scheme moves through the same five stages, in the same order.

  1. Investigation & Survey

Site walkover, topographic survey, and river gauging to establish ground truth.

  2. Hydrology & Hydraulics

Flow analysis and hydraulic modeling to size the scheme correctly.

  3. Feasibility & Planning

Layout options assessed for cost, capacity, and constructability.

  4. Detailed Engineering

Full structural and hydraulic design, ready for construction tender.

  5. Construction Support

Site supervision through to commissioning of the powerhouse.
